For this episode of Stacking the Shelves I bring you a couple library books from my ever growing library haul and one book that I received for my birthday last month! They also share the dubious distinction of not having yet been read. Please give a round of applause to your Caturday models: Pavel, Liam and of course the reading cat, Gomez.

First Book Up: The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell

Genre:American Horror Story has nothing on-oh wait, that isn’t a genre. Adult Thrillers Serial Killer Thrillers/Historical Thrillers

Synopsis: I’m going to start the synopsis with an up-front quote from a character, one Mr. Hobbs:

It was that- that extinguishing of their very last hope- that I savored more than anything, more even than the extinguishing of their lives… It was then they realized that the Devil is just God in his night attire.

Viktor Kosárek, a psychiatrist newly trained by Carl Jung, arrives at the infamous Hrad Orlu Asylum for the Criminally Insane. The state-of-the-art facility is located in a medieval mountaintop castle outside of Prague, though the site is infamous for concealing dark secrets going back many generations.
The asylum houses the country’s six most treacherous killers–known to the staff as The Woodcutter, The Clown, The Glass Collector, The Vegetarian, The Sciomancer, and The Demon–and Viktor hopes to use a new medical technique to prove that these patients share a common archetype of evil, a phenomenon known as The Devil Aspect. As he begins to learn the stunning secrets of these patients, five men and one woman, Viktor must face the disturbing possibility that these six may share another dark truth.
Seriously. If this isn’t a season of American Horror Story waiting to happen? I don’t know what is.

Synopsis: In The Dark Lord—a hilarious parody of epic fantasyJack Heckel (author of The Charming Tales) tells the story of a young man traveling into a dark and magical world of dwarves, elves, and sorcerers to restore the balance between good and evil. After spending years as an undercover, evil wizard in the enchanted world of Trelari, Avery hangs up the cloak he wore as the Dark Lord and returns to his studies at Mysterium University.
On the day of his homecoming, Avery drunkenly confides in a beautiful stranger, telling her everything about his travels. When Avery awakens, hungover and confused, he discovers that his worst nightmare has come true: the mysterious girl has gone to Trelari to rule as a Dark Queen.  Avery must travel back to the bewitched land and liberate the magical creatures . . . but in order to do so, he has to join forces with the very people who fought him as the Dark Lord.

Second Disclaimer:  am reading/listeningto Smoke Thieves in anticipation of the release (and fingers crossed, an ARC of Demon World, which is out August 6th. Genre: Young Adult Epic Fantasy
